Many associate African-American culture in its beginning with Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and 1930s. This time can be described as "spiritual coming of age" in a time that African Americans began to seize its "first chances for group expression and self determination (Rowen and Brunner 2003). The Harlem Renaissance is important in the culture of the African American as a step in independence and pride.
