This paper is a short discussion of the life of Linda Brent, as written by Harriet Jacobs in Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl. The paper examines the extent and meaning of slavery in Linda's life outside the context of physical hardships and punishments, considering slavery in a more ideological sense. The paper also illustrates ways in which Linda took back some of the control that was placed on her, if only briefly.
