This paper comaperes the works of two architectural historains on the smae subject, the English contry house, with the books being "Life in the English Country House" by Mark Girouard and "The Villa" by James S. Ackerman, showing the nature of the English country house, addressing questions of its form, its function, how it was developed, how it relates to architectural history, and what it has meant in English social life.
