El Greco's Assumption of the Virgin: An Analysis of Content and Theme
This six-page undergraduate paper analyzes El Grecos painting Assumption
of the Virgin. The author notes that in this emotionally powerful painting, El Greco
used the elements of line, light and dark, area, perspective, color, texture, and volume with effectiveness and purpose. In order to emphasize his theme of the Virgin Marys saintliness, he used sharp lines, foreground light and background glow, an elevated visual status for Mary, and limited volume to convey the wonder and awe of the assumption.
