Visual Art as a Reflection of Womens Roles in Ancient Greece

This paper addresses the roles of women in classical Greece (479-336 BCE), and their portrayal in art and artifacts of the time. Of particular interest are the three important aspects of womanhood in this era: as mother/wife and goddess. Unless the work referred directly to mythology, these were the three interpretations open to the viewer of a female image in the Classical world. The philosophy of the time encouraged artists to look for universal beauty in their female subjects instead of individuality.
