This paper examines Robert Carneiro's Circumscription theory in the context of four case studies. It finds that the theory does not specifically explain all cases where states emerged, but that it applies to most cases in a general way. Overall, states arise in those regions with circumscribed environments, in which population growth causes social conflict over land and resources. 5 pgs. Bibliography lists 2 sources.
