This paper analyzes the romantic movement in the Spanish America of the nineteenth century. Through the interpretation of the works of José María Heredia, Esteban Echevarría, Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, Jorge Isaacs and Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda we also catch a glimpse of the nationalistic movement that existed in the South of the American continent in that era.
