This paper considers the life and work of nurse and academic Virginia A. Henderson, who was born in 1897 and died in 1996 and whose definition of nursing is accepted to this day for the view it creates of the nursing profession and of the meaning of nursing as a profession, based on her writings and her career as both a nurse and a teacher and administrator.
