This essay investigates how the Western imagination has invented a Japanese identity through differing media. Focusing on imagery and representation, this paper engages a literary analysis in order to explicate how Japanese culture is constructed by non-Japanese, and compares these productions (theatre, film, text) with aspects of Japanese culture, social mores, and history. 25 pgs. 9 sources.
